The best Nimzo-Indian repertoire book for Black is Playing the Nimzo-Indian by Renier Castellanos (Quality Chess), the newest complete repertoire after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Bb4. The reviewed alternative is A Complete Opening Repertoire for Black after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6, Volume 1: Nimzo-Indian by GM Dariusz Swiercz (Thinkers Publishing), endorsed by IM John Donaldson and built to slot into a full answer to 1.d4.

For club players, the most approachable dedicated repertoire is The Modern Nimzo-Indian by GM Igor Lysyj (Chess Stars). Because White can avoid the Nimzo with 3.Nf3, two books pair it with a partner defense: Opening Repertoire: The Nimzo-Indian and Queen's Indian Defences by Nigel Davies and The Nimzo and Bogo-Indian Revisited by Lukasz Jarmula. The closest thing to a beginner’s book is The Nimzo-Indian: Move by Move by GM John Emms (Everyman Chess).

To meet the Nimzo as White, the dedicated repertoire is Fighting the Nimzo by Semko Semkov (Chess Stars, 2025), built on Kasparov’s 4.Nf3 move order with transpositions into the Rubinstein. The Nimzo-Indian Bible for White by Milos Pavlovic is a two-volume alternative covering the Classical 4.Qc2 and the Rubinstein 4.e3. All are available on Forward Chess with free interactive sample chapters.

What is the Nimzo-Indian Defense?

The Nimzo-Indian Defense is a Black reply to 1.d4, reached after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Bb4. Black develops the bishop to b4, pinning White’s knight on c3, rather than answering in the centre with a pawn. The books below build a repertoire either for playing it as Black or for meeting it as White.

The Nimzo-Indian Defense: Black pins the c3-knight with 3…Bb4.

A close relative, the Bogo-Indian (1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 Bb4+), arises when White avoids 3.Nc3, and is often learned alongside the Nimzo — one repertoire book below covers both.

Recommended Study Path

Step 1: Learn what the pin is for before picking a repertoire

The Nimzo trades the bishop pair for structural targets, usually doubled c-pawns, and the whole opening turns on whether Black can blockade and exploit them. Emms teaches exactly this, from both sides, through questions rather than variations. Understanding the trade-off first makes every repertoire book below far easier to absorb.

Step 2: Solve the 3.Nf3 problem before you commit

There is no Nimzo after 3.Nf3, so a Nimzo player needs a partner defence from day one. Davies pairs it with the Queen's Indian, Jarmula with the Bogo-Indian, and Swiercz answers it in a second volume. Decide which partner suits you, because it determines which book is right rather than the other way round.

Step 3: Pick one repertoire and work through it whole

Lysyj is the streamlined option, Castellanos the newest and deepest, Swiercz the one built to slot into a complete 1.d4 system. Work through your chosen book in full rather than sampling lines. The Nimzo branches early and opponents choose the branch, so gaps show up quickly.

Step 4: Drill the structures on the interactive board, then read the White side

The Nimzo produces a handful of recurring structures, and stepping through them move by move beats reading static diagrams. Once the repertoire is in your games, Semkov's and Pavlovic's White books show you exactly which lines strong opponents are preparing against you.

For Beginners

Which Nimzo-Indian book is best for beginners?

There is no dedicated beginner’s book on the Nimzo-Indian, but the most accessible starting point is Nimzo-Indian: Move by Move by John Emms (Everyman Chess, 2011).

It teaches the opening through the Move-by-Move question-and-answer format, examining the Nimzo from both sides with illustrative games rather than dense variation trees. A Kings Head Chess Club review called it a “first class book on the Nimzo-Indian,” and it remains a gentle way in for an improving player. Because the Nimzo is a structural, positional opening, its 2011 vintage dates slowly; a player who sticks with the Nimzo will later move up to one of the dedicated repertoires below.

These three suit different needs: Lysyj is the focused lead pick, while Davies and Jarmuła each bundle in a sister opening alongside the Nimzo.

The Modern Nimzo-Indian by Igor Lysyj (Chess Stars, 2022) is the best focused club-level repertoire — a dedicated, streamlined Nimzo pitched squarely at the improving player. It is well rated by early readers (5/5 on Forward Chess), and as a single-opening book published by Chess Stars it is the choice for a club player who wants one sound Nimzo and nothing extra.

Opening Repertoire: The Nimzo-Indian and Queen’s Indian Defences by Nigel Davies (Everyman Chess, 2022) gives you both Black Indian defenses in one book. Because White can duck the Nimzo with 3.Nf3, pairing it with the Queen’s Indian produces a complete answer to 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4, and Davies — an experienced coach and author — guides the reader through both. It is broadly well received (rated around 4.5/5 across two dozen reader ratings), and is the pick for a club player who wants one book to cover the whole complex.

The Nimzo & Bogo-Indian Revisited by Łukasz Jarmuła (Thinkers Publishing, 2022) pairs the Nimzo with its sister, the Bogo-Indian. It offers a complete repertoire for Black across both openings — the Nimzo against 3.Nc3 and the Bogo-Indian (3…Bb4+) against 3.Nf3 — and has had a positive if limited community reception. Choose it over the Davies book if you prefer the Bogo-Indian to the Queen’s Indian as your answer to 3.Nf3.

Fighting the Nimzo by Semko Semkov (Chess Stars, 2025) is the dedicated White repertoire to reach for — a current, single-volume anti-Nimzo repertoire built on 4.Nf3 (a Kasparov move order) with a 4.e3 Rubinstein option. It is well rated by early readers (4.8/5 on Forward Chess), though it has not yet drawn a major published review. As the most recent dedicated anti-Nimzo repertoire, it is the recommended way to meet the Nimzo as White.

The Nimzo-Indian Bible for White (Vols 1 & 2)

The Nimzo-Indian Bible for White by Miloš Pavlović (Thinkers Publishing, 2023) is a two-volume alternative for White players who prefer a different system. Volume 1 covers the Classical 4.Qc2 (and 4.Bd2), and Volume 2 the 4.e3 Rubinstein — a broad, recent treatment across two books. It is a decent, up-to-date option, though it has not been the subject of a major published review; take it as a solid second choice to Semkov’s book if its specific systems appeal to you.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best book to learn the Nimzo-Indian?

For most players, one of two: The Modern Nimzo-Indian by Lysyj for a focused single-opening repertoire, or The Nimzo-Indian: Move by Move by Emms if you want to learn the ideas from both sides before committing to a repertoire. Advanced players building current theory should look at Playing the Nimzo-Indian by Castellanos, the newest complete Black repertoire.

Is there a Nimzo-Indian book for beginners?

Not a dedicated one. The Nimzo-Indian: Move by Move by Emms is the usual entry point. It examines the opening from both sides of the board through a question-and-answer format, so it teaches understanding rather than serving as a move-by-move repertoire.

Which Nimzo book is the most up to date?

Playing the Nimzo-Indian by Renier Castellanos (Quality Chess, 2024) is the newest complete Black repertoire. Fighting the Nimzo by Semko Semkov (Chess Stars, 2025) is the newest book from White’s side.

Do I need a separate book for when White plays 3.Nf3?

Yes. After 3.Nf3 there is no Nimzo-Indian, so Black needs a partner defense. Two books solve this in a single volume: Davies pairs the Nimzo with the Queen’s Indian, and Jarmula pairs it with the Bogo-Indian. Swiercz answers White’s alternatives in a second volume, and the companion volume to Castellanos is announced as forthcoming.

How do I face the Nimzo-Indian as White?

Fighting the Nimzo by Semkov (2025) is the recommended dedicated repertoire, starting with Kasparov’s 4.Nf3 move order and often transposing into the Rubinstein System with e3. The Nimzo-Indian Bible for White by Pavlovic is a two-volume alternative covering the Classical 4.Qc2 and 4.Bd2 in Volume 1 and the Rubinstein 4.e3 in Volume 2.

Other books, and where the Nimzo fits a wider repertoire

If you would rather meet the Nimzo as one part of a complete White repertoire than with a dedicated anti-Nimzo book, several broad 1.d4 repertoires include a Nimzo chapter — see our guide to the best 1.d4 repertoire books (coming soon).

Every book named in this guide is available on Forward Chess, each with a free sample to read.

Final Recommendations:

For beginners — start here

The Nimzo-Indian: Move by Move by Emms. It examines the opening from both sides through questions rather than variation trees, so it teaches you what the pin on c3 is actually for. Treat it as the introduction you will outgrow, then move to one of the repertoires below.

For club players — pick by your answer to 3.Nf3

  1. The Modern Nimzo-Indian by Lysyj — the focused pick. One sound Nimzo and nothing extra, written to spare you unnecessary learning overhead.
  2. Opening Repertoire: The Nimzo-Indian and Queen's Indian Defences by Davies — choose this if you want the Queen's Indian as your answer to 3.Nf3.
  3. The Nimzo and Bogo-Indian Revisited by Jarmula — choose this if you prefer the Bogo-Indian instead. Mostly positional lines, organized around color strategy.

For advanced players — maximum depth

  1. Playing the Nimzo-Indian by Castellanos — the newest and most complete, with an active, counterattacking emphasis. Note that its companion volume against 3.Nf3 is still forthcoming.
  2. A Complete Opening Repertoire for Black … Volume 1: Nimzo-Indian by Swiercz — the reviewed alternative, built as the first volume of a full 1.d4 answer.

For White — facing the Nimzo

  1. Fighting the Nimzo by Semkov — the current dedicated repertoire, on Kasparov's 4.Nf3 with transpositions into the Rubinstein.
  2. The Nimzo-Indian Bible for White by Pavlovic (2 volumes) — the alternative if the Classical 4.Qc2 or the Rubinstein 4.e3 suits you better. Volume 2 covers the Rubinstein.

One thought on “Best Nimzo-Indian Defense Chess Books: Complete Opening Guide”
  1. I am a bit surprised that Sielecki’s book on the Nimzo and Bogo is not mentioned. It has a repertoire against both Nc3 and Nf3 and favors a dark squared approach, which is quite easy to learn and play. Otherwise a great blog post.
