The present book was originally published in German in 1922, containing 87 of his studies. This volume presents the material in English for the first time. It further contains additional versions and corrections of Sehwers' studies along with all his other studies.
In this new edition, the compositions and analysis have been thoroughly reanalyzed by FIDE Master Carsten Hansen.
While Josef Kling is mostly known for his partnership with Bernhard Horwitz in their classic work 'Chess Studies and Endgames', the present book of chess problems and endgame studies precedes that work by a few years.
In this new edition, all of the compositions and accompanying analysis have been thoroughly reanalyzed by FIDE Master Carsten Hansen.
Composing and solving chess problems can seem like an entirely different world from regular chess, and in many ways, they are, but there are plenty of overlapping issues and applications.
In this volume, James Rayner, who was a leading composer in his own right and the editor of the chess problem section in British Chess Magazine, dives into how to compose and solve chess problems, presenting techniques that can be applied immediately.
Furthermore, he presents a selection of chess problems, including some of his own by the leading composers of his day.
In this new edition, FIDE Master Carsten Hansen thoroughly reanalyzed all of the compositions and analyses and made the material accessible to modern readers and fans of chess problems.
In 1851, Horwitz & Kling published the first edition of the book. The collection of endgame studies was truly monumental, covering endgames of all types, often uncovering previously unknown truths about a variety of endgames, both simple and more complex ones.
After the passing of his colleague Kling, Horwitz started preparing a manuscript for a new, expanded edition. However, in 1885, he passed as well, and it was only through the effort of William Wayte that the second edition was published in 1889.
In this new edition, all of their compositions and analysis have been thoroughly reanalyzed by FIDE Master Carsten Hansen.

The fourth and final volume of FM Hans Renette and IM Tibor Karolyi’s treatise on the life and games of Viktor Korchnoi will surprise you. Covering the period from 1992 until the maestro’s death in 2016 at the age of 85, it contains a bumper 208 highly instructive games and fragments. Fighting games, attacks, endgames, theoretical battles, time scrambles, classical and rapid – it has the lot.
And Korchnoi was no weakling in his incredible late career! He won the category 16 Madrid tournament in 1995 at the age of 64 ahead of Short, Salov, Yusupov, Polgar and Timman among others. His first place at Sarajevo in 1998 saw him achieve a tournament performance rating of 2831 at the age of 67. He was the highest-rated 70-year old ever with an Elo of 2639 in 2001. In that same year he won the category 17 double-round robin tournament at Biel, ahead of Gelfand, Svidler, Lautier, Grischuk and Pelletier. In 2004 he achieved a tournament performance rating of nearly 2800 in the city of Paks, Hungary, at the age of 73.
Viktor was still unleashing opening novelties in his late 70s, playing tournaments around the world and winning some of them. Notably, he was World Senior Champion in 2006 and was ranked in the world’s top hundred as late as 2007, when aged 75. He became Swiss champion for the fifth time in 2011 at the age of 80 and he even introduced a novelty in a game with Uhlmann in 2015 when aged almost 84.
This book contains games against Magnus Carlsen (whom he beat in 2004), Fabiano Caruana (whom he beat in 2011), Kasparov, Karpov, Spassky, Gelfand, Timman, Short, Ponomariov, Yusupov, Svidler, Uhlmann, Hort, Beliavsky, Piket, Speelman, Tiviakov, Adams, Sadler, Romanishin, Vallejo, Vasiukov, Sutovsky, Gashimov, Ashley, and the legendary trainer Mark Dvoretsky among many others.
It also contains 80 tournament and family photos, the vast majority of them published in a book for the first time. This book comes in B/W paperback, B/W hardback and full-colour hardback. In the full-colour version of the book, 70 of these photos are in colour.

This is an excellent way to study any chess opening and at the same time improve your general chess skills and knowledge.
The Queen’s Indian enjoys a deserved reputation as a reliable opening choice for Black against 1 d4. Black’s opening system involves an early queenside fianchetto with the hypermodern approach of controlling the centre with pieces, and the resulting positions are rich in dynamic and strategic possibilities for both sides. The Queen’s Indian is a popular choice at all levels of chess, and many of the World’s top players have employed it as part of their opening repertoires. In this book, International Master and chess coach Lorin D’Costa invites you to join him in studying the Queen’s Indian. He highlights the typical plans and tactics for both sides, constructs a practical repertoire for Black and provides answers to all the key questions.

The Fine Art of the Endgame Study
The chess endgame study has a long and storied history and occupies a unique place in chess because of its similarity to practical play. Many studies contain beautiful ideas and combinations. Solving or even simply playing through endgame studies is an effective method of studying the strategic and tactical elements of play and contributes to the growth of the number of fans of this chess art.
However, many chessplayers are unaware or apprehensive of endgame studies. The studies seem to be almost other-worldly. But now, for the first time, a world-class endgame composer explains the basics of studies, from the basic terms and themes, to solving and even composing endgame studies!
If you have always wanted to explore endgame studies but thought they were too abstract or difficult, this book is for you. The author breaks down all the basic themes, with examples and clear explanations.
The book you are holding – a first of its kind – is a complete practical guide to the wonderland of our fine art aimed at leading you to your upcoming solving and composing adventures by a world class expert – From the Foreword by Yochanan Afek
Whether you are seeking to improve your tactical and strategic endgame skills or just wish to enjoy the beauty and aesthetic appeal of endgame studies, let Oleg Pervakov open the door to the fine art of the endgame study.

This new book by Mikhail Shereshevsky, one of the most respected chess trainers in the world, is about a very important but little-explored topic: associative thinking. How can a modern chess student avoid drowning in the flood of information? The answer is to stop mechanically memorizing moves and turn on your curiosity. Try to create a vivid image of the technique you are studying and remember it as an association!
During a game of chess, we have associations all the time. We are not talking about specific pawn structures, but about more abstract things. What is the best interaction between knight and pawn? Where should the rook be placed – behind the passed pawn or to the side? On which squares should you place your pawns when you have a bishop against a knight? Generations of chess players before us have answered these and similar questions.
Shereshevsky clearly shows that studying the games of great chess players will help you to improve your associative thinking, especially when the comments come from the players themselves. The author pays special attention to such outstanding grandmasters as Ulf Andersson, Anatoly Karpov, Vladimir Kramnik, and Magnus Carlsen.
As with all of Shereshevsky’s books, this manual offers supreme examples of chess training excellence. Studying this book will improve your understanding of chess enormously and help you on your way to chess mastery.
Mikhail Shereshevsky (1950) is one of the most respected chess trainers and writers in the world. In 2018, he published the best-selling The Shereshevsky Method to Improve in Chess. His magnum opus, Endgame Strategy, is a must-read for ambitious players. It’s been hailed by superstars like Vladimir Kramnik and Magnus Carlsen as their formative guide to handling the endgame.
Grandmaster Sergei Tiviakov once remained unbeaten in a streak of 110 consecutive professional chess games. Who could be a better guide to help you find the right move in any chess position than Tiviakov? His style was polished in the famous Russian chess school and hardened by his vast experience in hundreds of strong tournaments.
The first volume of this highly acclaimed series on chess strategy dealt with pawn structures. In the second volume, Sergei discussed various types of piece play, relating it to specific situations on the chessboard. In this third volume, he focusses on the basis: the individual move in a game.
Choosing a move is an eternal dilemma for a chess player. How can we recognize the right solution in any position? How can we gain confidence in our decisions? Where do we direct our pieces and pawns?
In ten chapters, Tiviakov explains in his own clear and unique way how a single move can strengthen your position, weaken your opponent’s position, or simply avoid trouble. Chapters are also devoted to finding the right move by intuition or by weighing up candidate moves, and to more practical advice such as how much time you should spend on one move.
Classic games, as well as many samples from Tiviakov’s own rich practice, are used to illustrate the arguments made. Instructive exercises have been added to help the reader test his newly acquired knowledge. Like the other volumes of Rock Solid Chess, this book will teach you much more than traditional chess manuals do and will help you to greatly improve your decision-making in chess.
Grandmaster Sergei Tiviakov is an Olympic gold medallist, a three-time Dutch Champion and a former European Champion. In 2024, at 51, he still became vice-champion of the Netherlands.

This chess book centers around an attempt to introduce analytics to modern chess, which eventually culminates in a chess personality quiz, although this takes part in the third part of the book. The final few chapters are really intended as an aperitif, and accompliment to what has gone before. So in essence, you could view this book as being made up of four parts. In the first part of this book I'll be talking about some of my recent tournaments and what I have learned in regards to my own chess. The characters I've met along the way and what we can learn from them; their mistakes and my mistakes. In the second part I will attempt to prepare you for the third and most important part, the personality quiz, which will hopefully guide the reader towards the necessary steps to make chess improvement.
