WINNER of The Guardian 2009 Chess Book of the Year Award
WINNER of The British Chess Federation 1995 Book of the Year Award
In this modern chess classic David Bronstein, one of the greatest chess artists of all time, shares his insights in his wonderful games – 237 of them played between 1938 and 1996, a career spanning 58 years.
Bronstein was famous for the joy he derived from teaching the game and this spirit permeates his writings. His explanations and analyses are invariably lively and easy to understand for players of all levels who want to improve their chess.
David Bronstein’s achievements and his legendary creativity have ensured him a unique position in chess history. He drew a match for the World Championship, won Soviet Championship twice and took first place in numerous international tournaments.
This revised and expanded edition, published two years after Bronstein passed away, contains a lot of new material and two moving In Memoriams, one by Bronstein’s widow Tatiana Boleslavskaya and one by his co-author and friend Tom Fürstenberg.
Furthermore, 32 pages of unique photographs have been included, as well as extensive new articles by Bronstein himself.
This unconventional book is a fitting homage to one of the eternal chess greats, fascinating and rich in ideas, and written with contagious enthusiasm.

IM John Donaldson:

Each chapter includes a selection of highlighted ideas & concepts from White’s and Black’s perspectives.
After that follows a theoretical discussion, where, unsurprisingly, many of the concepts make a second, concrete, appearance.
Most newly analyzed games are much more modern, and most annotations there were typically made from scratch for this book.
If we count the endless online rapid and blitz tournaments, which are becoming increasingly popular, the new games presented in this book, even the fast ones, are of exceptionally high quality and incredibly important if you wish to surprise your opponent.
On top this book cuts through the dense theory that surrounds this opening and establishes a total new repertoire based around consistent strategies, concepts and novelties.
It is amazing how much play you can create in a seemingly equal chess position - if you persevere. In this book, the greatest chess player of all time, Magnus Carlsen, and his friend, Grandmaster David Howell, explain how to win these kinds of chess games.
Carlsen and Howell show how you can keep a game alive, how you can keep posing problems to your opponent, how you can recognize the first small mistakes, and how you can grind your opponent down until he cracks.
New In Chess has converted this book from a popular Chessable video and MoveTrainer ® course with the help of Carlsen and Howell. The lively conversations of the two friends translate very well into a highly instructive chess manual. It is top-level chess, using grandmaster games as examples, but the insights are accessible to players of all levels.
Magnus Carlsen won the World Chess Championship in 2013 and gave up his title in 2023. He is regarded as the greatest player of all time and holds the #1 spot in the world ranking. He has read dozens of books published by New In Chess, but this is the first book with Carlsen as an author. Carlsen (1990) lives in Oslo, Norway.
David Howell is an elite chess Grandmaster with a 2700+ peak rating and an individual gold medal winner at the Olympiad. He is a well-known and popular commentator on live chess streams. Howell (1990) is two weeks older than Carlsen, was born in Eastbourne, United Kingdom, and lives in Oslo, Norway.
IM Gary Lane (Australian Chess)
“This delightful book looks at various instructive games which will certainly make you keener to work harder in your next tournament. An inspirational way to definitely improve your chess rating.”
WIM Alexey Root on sparkchess.com:
"Howell and Carlsen are entertaining teachers. They explain their own games, and their thought processes, extremely well. My FIDE rating is 1925, and I learned a lot from their book."

Wouldn’t it be nice if we had a set of rules that always directed us towards the best move in any chess position? That is precisely what Grandmaster Julen Arizmendi has been searching for during his long and successful coaching career, and this is where he shares his verdict: it cannot be done, but we should still be trying!
Practical Chess Strategy will teach you to break down any position into its underlying elements and apply core concepts that will guide you towards the best move and plan. GM Arizmendi deals with cases where our intuition fails us, teaches us how to assess imbalances, refutes common misconceptions about strategy, and provides exercises to test and reinforce the reader’s newfound understanding.
The chess board is rarely big enough for both armies, leading to a fight for the centre, and a fight for space, which together with material and time are key elements of chess strategy.
How we fight for extra space and exploit it once conquered is the topic of this volume in the Winning Chess Strategies series, Exploiting a Space Advantage. Cyrus Lakdawala explains how to squeeze your opponents into submission, when a space advantage leads to an attack, why we should be careful not to overextend, as well as many more concepts that can help you better understand the elusive concept of space.
Get ready to stop feeling cramped and start grabbing some space!
Cyrus Lakdawala is an International Master, a former National Open and American Open Champion, and six-time State Champion. He has been teaching chess for over 40 years, and coaches top US juniors.
All chess players have heard about the power of the bishop pair – but many have no understanding of when the two bishops are superior, nor why they are superior, when they are, and least of all, what to do with the advantage of the two bishops, when achieved.
Questions like these are at the epicentre of this refreshing new project, headlined by prolific and well-established author Cyrus Lakdawala. Keeping variations to a bear minimum, but using extensive explanations combined with his trademark prose, the American International Master dissects this well-known but rarely understood theme, in terms that make it accessible to players on all levels of their chess development. Exploiting the Bishop Pair aims to be both an exciting and pleasant read, as well as a deeply instructive textbook, granting the ambitious player all they need to put in their arsenal an invaluable Winning Chess Strategy.
Chess games are won and lost in the fight to create, attack and exploit each other’s weaknesses. A weakness can be of pawns, pieces, squares, files, on colour complexes – and so on.
Pinpointing weaknesses and knowing how to exploit them is an integral part of building a Winning Chess Strategy. Hence, in this volume of our series, American author Cyrus Lakdawala tackles this multifaceted term, making it approachable for anyone wishing to learn how to find and exploit the soft spots in their opponent’s camps.
The world’s top trainer, Mark Dvoretsky, and one of his best-known pupils, grandmaster Artur Yusupov, present a five-volume series based on courses given to talented young players throughout the world. The books contain contributions by other leading trainers and grandmasters, as well as games by pupils who have attended the courses.
In this first volume the reader is shown how to assess his strengths and weaknesses, analyse his own games, and learn from the rich heritage of the past by a study of the chess classics. Over a hundred graded test positions provide ample material for self-improvement.
