The Sicilian Sveshnikov arises after the opening moves 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 e5, and is an ideal weapon based on sound principles of fast development and seizing central space. Decades of practical testing and analysis have proved the theoretical soundness of Black’s system, and its dynamic counterattacking potential makes it a popular choice among club players and top grandmasters alike.
Serbian grandmaster Milos Pavlovic is a lifelong Sveshnikov player as well as an experienced chess trainer, making him the ideal guide to this opening. Playing the Sveshnikov offers a complete repertoire for Black in the Sveshnikov, including secondary recommendations against certain key variations. With top-class analysis, novelties galore and thoughtful explanations, this book provides everything you need to learn and play the Sveshnikov with success.
Milos Pavlovic is a former Yugoslav Champion who has held the grandmaster title since 1993. An experienced tournament competitor, theoretician and FIDE Trainer, he is an expert on the Sveshnikov, having played both sides of it for most of his chess career.
In this sequel to his Improve Your Chess Pattern Recognition, Arthur van de Oudeweetering presents players of almost every level with a fresh supply of essential, yet easy-to-remember building blocks for their chess knowledge.”
Dear chess friends,
For 180 years, the German chess magazine “SCHACH” has been part of the chess world. Today, we are delighted to open a new chapter in its history: for the first time, our magazine is available in English. Named “CHESS INSIGHT”. The magazine is available in digital format only.
For us, this is much more than a translation. It is an invitation.
Chess has always crossed borders. Players from different countries, cultures and generations meet over the same 64 squares and share a language that needs no translation. With this English edition, we would like CHESS INSIGHT to cross another border as well – and make the journalism, analysis and stories that have made our magazine unique accessible to chess enthusiasts around the world.
Our ambition remains the same. We want to take our readers closer to the people and events that shape chess. You will find deeply annotated games, background stories, tournament reports and personal perspectives from grandmasters, coaches, journalists and other personalities from the chess world.
We believe that a chess magazine should offer something that goes beyond results and moves. In an age when games can be followed live from almost anywhere in the world, a magazine has to answer different questions: What happened behind the scenes? What were the players thinking? Why did a particular moment matter? And what can we learn from it?
That is what SCHACH has always tried to do.
We hope to welcome many new readers – and we would very much like to hear from you. Tell us what you enjoy, what you would like to see more of, and what SCHACH can become for an international audience.
Thank you for joining us at the beginning of this new chapter.
Welcome to CHESS INSIGHT. We are very happy to have you with us.
Van Delft has created a unique thematic structure for all types of positional sacrifices. He shows the early historical examples, explains which long-term goals are typical for each fundamental theme and presents lots of instructive modern examples. He then concentrates on those sacrifices that have become standard features of positional play. Solving the exercises he has added will further enhance your skills. Playing a positional sacrifice will always require courage. Merijn van Delft takes you by the hand and not only teaches the essential technical know-how, he also helps you to recognize the opportunities when to take the plunge. Mastering Positional Sacrifices is bound to become a modern-day classic.
This is the second half of Kiril Georgiev and Semko Semkov’s White repertoire with the English Opening, and it covers everything except 1...e5 (which is handled in Volume 1). In other words, this is your answer to the Symmetrical English and to Black’s attempts to steer the game into Indian and Slav structures.
The backbone is 1.c4 c5 — the Symmetrical complex — where the authors give clear recommendations against the ...g6, ...e6, ...b6 and Maróczy Bind set-ups. From there the book systematically shuts down Black’s independent tries: anti-Grünfeld and anti-Nimzo lines, anti-Slav and Chebanenko set-ups, an anti-Meran, and an anti-Queen’s-Gambit approach, plus a closing chapter on the odds and ends.
As with all Chess Stars repertoire books, each chapter is built in three layers — a "Main Ideas" overview for the strategic picture, a detailed "Step by Step" theoretical section, and annotated complete games — so you can study as deeply or as lightly as you need.
Together with Volume 1 it forms a complete, coherent 1.c4 repertoire. Aimed at club players and above who want a low-maintenance but principled way to play the English.
Every chess player hopes to set off brilliant combinations and win games in a blaze of glory. Such combinations do not come into being by themselves, however; they appear only as the result of proper chess strategy. It is therefore surprising that so few books deal with this highly important subject, and understandable that Pachman's modern classic has been so enthusiastically received by chessplayers at all levels.
Ludĕk Pachman, a Czech grandmaster, has long had an international reputation as a chess theorist, but until now his work has not been available in English. This present volume, which condenses his great Modern Schachstrategie, presents his ideas and theories in a form that the English-speaking world can assimilate easily. Beginning with basic concepts and the rules of the minor and major pieces, it covers the use of the Queen, the active King, exchanges, various kinds of Pawns, the center and its use, superiority on the wings, minority attack, strategical points and weak squares, methods of attack and defense, and similar topics. Pachman elaborates the various kinds of strategy that can be employed, and shows how each leads to tactical opportunities. It has been said that his section on the Rook alone make his book indispensable to the serious chess player, since the Rook is so important in both middle and endgames.
Pachman presents his method in the form of a thorough, systematic, analytical text, which draws upon scores of great games for exemplification. Both classical and very recent masters are included, although stress is on the moderns: Capablanca, Alekhine, Dr. Lasker, Rubinstein, Nimzovich, Botvinnik, Reshevsky, Bronstein, Smyslov, and Spasski.
The Sicilian Dragon is one of Black's most thrilling and uncompromising responses to 1.e4.
In Grandmaster Repertoire: The Dragon – Volume 1, Grandmaster Gawain Jones presents a complete Black repertoire against the Yugoslav Attack (9.Bc4 and 9.g4 variations) — the sharpest and most critical test White can pose to the Dragon.
What's Covered?
About the Author:
Gawain Jones is an English grandmaster, twice British Champion, and one of the most respected opening authors of his generation. Known for a dynamic, creative playing style, he is widely regarded as the world's leading expert on the Sicilian Dragon and has played it as a primary weapon throughout his career.
The book presents a Black repertoire based on the Nimzo-Indian Defence.
From the "Preface": "I wrote this book for the adventurer who wants to start playing the Nimzo but is afraid of drowning in its lines. My creative task is to provide the reader with useful practical advice while sparing him unnecessary learning overhead." Igor Lysyj
Igor Lysyj is a strong grandmaster with a peak rating of 2700. He is also a FIDE Senior Trainer. Lysyj was Russian champion in 2014, European blitz champion in 2019, won the World Student’s championship in 2008 with the Russian team. Together with 43 other Russian chess players (including Chess Stars authors Khalifman, Kryakvin, Barski), Lysyj signed an open letter to Russian president Vladimir Putin, protesting against the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine and expressing solidarity with the Ukrainian people.
The Full English Opening – Mastering the Fundamentals by Carsten Hansen is the first one-volume guide to cover all major variations of 1.c4 while focusing on what really matters: understanding. Instead of drowning you in endless theory, Hansen takes you inside the core plans, ideas, and strategies that make the English Opening a powerful weapon. Drawing on decades of experience and inspired by legends like Viktor Kortchnoi, he equips you to build your own repertoire with confidence—so you control the opening, not the other way around.
Tigran Gorgiev (1910-1976) was one of the Soviet Union’s best endgame study composers. In his lifetime he produced around 400 studies and wrote three books and 101 articles with chess compositions. The vast majority of his endgame studies are of a practical nature, meaning that the positions presented could have arisen in over-the-board play. This makes them particularly useful to study for practical players as well as study fans. Sergei Tkachenko, a member of the Ukrainian team that won the 5th World Chess Composition Tournament in 1997 and which came second in 2000, 2004, 2013, and 2017, has selected his 100 favorite Tigran Gorgiev studies, revising some of them and providing explanations suitable for less experienced solvers. There are no more than six moves in most solutions, so experienced chess players can analyze the positions directly from the diagrams.
I chose to write a book on advanced rook endings as I simply did not wish to write another book that would be like the many already available. I have done my best to present analysis and articles I have written over the past 10–15 years. This work has been presented in my daily coaching sessions, seminars, workshops, etc. The material has helped a lot of trainees to develop into quite strong players gaining international titles and championships. The endgame is the moment of truth. It is the phase of the game where we will try to reap the seeds of our effort regardless of whether that is the full point of victory or the half point of the draw. The significance of errors increases in the endgame as the opportunities for correcting them are few. Mark Dvoretsky makes a general quote: Rook activity is the cornerstone in the evaluation and play of rook endgames. This activity may take diverse forms: from attacking the enemy pawns, to the support of one’s own passed pawns, to the interdiction or pursuit of the enemy king. There are indeed times when the rook must remain passive and implement purely defensive functions. But even then, one must stubbornly seek out any possibility of activating the rook, not even stopping at sacrificing pawns, or making your own king’s position worse.
The King’s Indian Defence is one of the great classical counter-attacking openings. The most aggressive world champions (including Mikhail Tal, Bobby Fischer and Garry Kasparov) have all scored brilliant knockout victories with this opening. In this book the highly experienced coach international master Andrew Martin explains the basic ideas behind all the different variations that occur after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6. The focus on strategic elements such as pawn structures, attacking plans and typical piece manouevres allows the reader to quickly gain an excellent feel for this complex opening. First Steps is an opening series that is ideal for improving players who want simple and straightforward explanations.
